EDUCATION NEUROINCLUSION

Building learning environments where different minds can participate and thrive.

NISS helps schools, TVET colleges and universities understand neurodiversity, identify barriers and build the institutional capability required to support neurodivergent students.

WHAT EDUCATION NEUROINCLUSION MEANS

More than awareness. Better designed learning environments.

Education neuroinclusion is not simply about recognising neurodiversity or responding only when a student experiences difficulty.

It involves examining how leadership, teaching, communication, assessment, technology and learning environments may create unnecessary barriers for people who process information, communicate or learn differently.

NISS helps educational institutions identify these barriers and develop practical, context-specific approaches that support more equitable participation and meaningful learning.

THE OBJECTIVE Reduce avoidable barriers so students can participate, learn and demonstrate their capabilities.
01

Institutional Leadership

Leadership, policy and institutional systems that recognise neurodiversity and support inclusive participation.

02

Teaching & Learning

Teaching approaches and learning materials that provide accessible ways to engage with and understand information.

03

Communication & Information

Clear communication, accessible documents and information presented in structured, manageable formats.

04

Assessment Practices

Thoughtful assessment practices that consider whether the format creates barriers unrelated to the intended outcome.

05

Physical & Sensory Environments

Consideration of noise, lighting, movement, interruptions and the sensory demands of learning spaces.

06

Student Support & Technology

Appropriate support and accessible technology that help students engage with their learning environment.

RECOGNISING BARRIERS IN EDUCATION

The barrier is not always the learner.

Neurodivergent students may experience barriers that are not immediately visible to educators, support teams or institutional leadership.

The difficulty may lie in how information, teaching, assessment or student services have been designed—not in a student’s ability or potential.

01

Admission & Registration

Complex application forms, unclear instructions, strict processes and information-heavy registration systems may create barriers before learning has even begun.

02

Written Information

Dense documents, inconsistent formatting and large volumes of written information can increase processing and comprehension demands.

03

Teaching Formats

Reliance on one teaching or participation format may limit access for students who process, communicate or engage with information differently.

04

Assessment & Time Pressure

Time-limited assessments and inflexible formats may measure a student’s response to the assessment conditions rather than the intended knowledge or skill.

05

Executive Functioning Demands

Competing deadlines, changing timetables and unclear priorities may intensify demands involving planning, organisation, working memory and task initiation.

06

Sensory Environments

Noise, lighting, crowded classrooms, movement and frequent interruptions may affect concentration, wellbeing and sustained participation.

07

Disclosure & Stigma

Students may avoid requesting support because they fear judgement, reduced opportunity, unwanted attention or being treated differently.

08

Digital Systems & Student Support

Inaccessible platforms, unfamiliar technology and difficult-to-navigate support processes may prevent students from accessing assistance when they need it.

Inclusive education does not lower expectations. It removes avoidable barriers to meaningful participation.

ACROSS EDUCATION

One principle. Different education contexts.

Neuroinclusion must respond to the purpose, people and systems of each educational environment. NISS works across schools, TVET colleges and universities to support more connected, context-specific approaches.

A CONNECTED APPROACH

Neuroinclusion should be developed throughout the education journey—not addressed only when a barrier becomes a crisis.

OUR EDUCATION APPROACH

From institutional insight to meaningful implementation.

Sustainable education neuroinclusion is developed through a considered process. NISS works with institutions to understand their context, identify barriers and strengthen the capability required for practical implementation.

A WHOLE-INSTITUTION APPROACH Leadership, systems, teaching and support must work together.
